G7: Chinese Culture Lecture—Traditional Method of Paper-making

March 12, 2021

At the beginning of the new semester, the Chinese cultural lecture began on March 10, 2021. To enable students to better learn about traditional Chinese culture and perceive the charm of Chinese culture, the first theme of this semester’s cultural lectures started with "Papermaking,” one of China’s Four Great Inventions,” to help students truly realize the mystery and magic of papermaking through communication, discussion, and hands-on practice.

On the day of the lecture, to help the students participate in the activities better, Mr. Johnson showed the students the score table as well as the rules for adding and subtracting points at the beginning of the lecture; student’s classroom performance would be taken into consideration, which greatly stimulated the enthusiasm of the students and made the atmosphere of the whole event lively. Then, to help the students understand the origin of papermaking, Mr. Johnson also asked random questions about an engaging video that he played for the students. While examining students’ previous Chinese knowledge mastery, Mr. Johnson gave a detailed introduction to why Papermaking came into being and its significance. During this period, Mr. Johnson also taught traditional Chinese etiquette to the students through several interactive activities. For example, why did the gesture of bowing in ancient China require the left hand on the top? The problem of the compound surname in traditional culture, etc., helped students learn more about Chinese culture while mastering “China’ s Four Great Inventions.”

At the end of the lecture, to make students feel the magic of Paper-making more intuitively, teachers distributed DIY papermaking tools, and the students could create their unique “paper” per the operating instructions and experience the joy of Cai Lun. Through this lecture, the children not only learned fascinating knowledge about traditional culture but also “traveled through time” with their hands-on practice and perceived the charm of Chinese culture!
