Grades 9-10: English Speech Competition

December 15, 2020

On CAS class on Wednesday, December 9th, 2020, 9th and 10th graders attended the English Speech Competition in the Grand Auditorium.

The topic for this year’s speech competition was “Why Should I Care?” Participants were required to give a speech about anything that they found to be important. Being a deliberately vague topic, it allowed participants to think deeply: what their stances are in potentially controversial topics, what they are passionate about, what they really want to share with people from the two grades, etc.

The competition started with an engaging host show. After that, 14 speeches were given by students from both grades. Most noticeably, many speakers were not public speakers, and it certainly required great courage for them to do such public speaking. The speeches were, indeed, diverse and covered many different fields. Victoria and Demi presented speeches on mental health and stress, subjects that are related to our personal lives; Ethan talked about oil tariffs and the environment, subjects that are related to the society and world that we live in. They are only four topics of fourteen; the multitude of speeches presented great interest to the audience.

With a speech made by Michael on data privacy, the speech competition concluded. After a brief and great K-Pop remix dance by POP5 members, the hosts announced the winners for both the speech and the past writing competition. It is, nevertheless, respectable to make a speech in front of more than 400 people; such a feat shall not be the honor of only three. Participants well deserved the rounds of applause they received.

Winnie’s excellent speech on bad movies won her first place in the speech competition. Finally, congratulations to the top three individuals of this competition!
