Sports Department: SHSID Stallions Get Their First Taste of Victory
The SHSID Stallions Men's varsity basketball team got their first “W” on December 5th after defeating the Concordia Phoenixes 70-68.
It’s been a tough season so far for the Stallions, who currently sit at 1-4. A lack of height on the team has proven a problem this season as the Stallions try to find other ways to make up for being last in the league with only 38.8 rebounds per game. On Saturday, the Blue and Whites looked to shoot from deep to stay in the game, having, by far, their best shooting performance of the season dialing in on 11 3-pointers.
The Phoenixes came out with a 1-3-1 trapping zone defense that caused issues for SHSID in the first half. The Stallions would keep the game close thanks to some stifling defense and much-improved rebounding and went into the halftime break on a high after Marcus Gao nearly ripped the net off the rim with a high-arching trifecta at the buzzer.
Marcus’ hot shooting would continue in the 3rd, hitting 3 of his game-high 5 3-pointers consecutively to help the Stallions tie up the game. The Stallions would take the lead in the 4th after yet another Marcus Gao air assault, putting the Stallions up 58-56. The Phoenixes would stick around and it was a back-and-forth affair. However, thanks to some solid play from bench players Yuning Kao and Jonathan Li, SHSID’s MVP Jimmy Chen was able to get some much-needed rest and come back fresh late in the game and tie the contest up at 66 points off a nice feed on the fast break from Anson Lin. With 11 seconds left in the game, the Stallions inbounded the ball to Anson Lin who travelled, giving Concordia one last shot at the win. On the ensuing possession, former SHSIDer Ryan Tang was found by Wesley Yu to be driving to the basket, sending him to the line with a chance to tie the game. He missed both free throws, but the Phoenixes would have one final shot at the buzzer after grabbing the offensive rebound. The shot was no good, and the Stallions held on for their first win of the season!
The Stallions take on a familiar foe in Jiaozhong tonight at 6pm. Jiaozhong will be looking to get back at the Stallions after being defeated at the hands of Jimmy Chen and Kane Daley who combined for 85 points in the come-from-behind win that would send the Stallions to their 4th consecutive Jr NBA finals.
