Grade 10: Caring about Our Environment and Embracing the Starry Sky

October 19, 2020

On October 14th, SHSID 10th graders gathered like usual at Zhentao Building Lecture Hall to listen to a speech given by one of their peers.

This time, the speaker William Li from 10(4) talked about light pollution, which is the overuse of artificial outdoor lights usually seen at night in many metropolitan cities. There are many different types of pollution, where light pollution is seldom addressed. Those lights block people living in the cities from seeing the natural wonders of the sky, destroy the habitats of wildlife due to lack of natural light, and increase the rate of global warming due to heat generated from the lights. Pointing those city lights downward, using more red lights or LED lights, and remembering to turn off lights when leaving a room would help reduce light pollution.

In his speech, William encouraged students to care more about the natural world and to join the astronomy club to discover more about the universe.
