Grades 11-12: the Annual Fire Drill

September 28, 2020

As the clock ticked towards 2pm on a cloudy September 23rd afternoon, a blaring alarm sounded throughout the halls of the Xianmian Building, startling many students and teachers. It was the annual fire drill, a precautionary measure conducted to prevent panic in the case of a genuine blaze.

Students evacuated from their classrooms swiftly, down the stairs if they were not already on the ground floor, and into the lobby, and eventually exiting out to the front of the building, all in order to practice how to evacuate safely and avoid any sort of commotion that might cause confusion or injury. Within a few minutes, the building had been emptied and a full crowd of juniors and seniors assembled in front of Xianmian Building. With years of fire drills in many different buildings under their belts, the process was smooth and took no more than a few minutes. This yearly exercise in fire safety serves as a constant reminder to remain levelheaded and calm in any dangerous situation, following set instructions, and making any response to a calamity as straightforward and trouble-free as possible. In that same spirit, these veteran high schoolers executed the plan flawlessly and were back to class before the next bell rang.
