Grade 10: Sharing about Club Activities

May 25, 2020

In the third week of May, Yeji from 10(3) shared her story of music. At the end of the second semester of ninth grade, Yeji met six of her soulmates and started to explore her musical world. Her journey into A Capella, pure phonetic harmony without any instrumental accompaniment, began. Moreover, she had life-changing experiences because of her dear Human Orchestra.

Yeji was a girl who lacked confidence in many fields. Before Yeji joined the Human Orchestra, she had always admired them because she thought she did not have enough talent to join this amazing group. The first time she saw them was during the 2018 Art Festival. She always had the notion that she wouldn’t ever join a group as perfect as Human Orchestra, in which they sing and compose their songs by themselves. The harmony seemed so perfect to her that she did not notice her inner potential singing skills in the moment.

A surprising yet wonderful thing happened to her. Yeji was cast by the leader of Human Orchestra. Around the time the semester was ending, the group was in need of a new Soprano because of the upcoming recording of their new songs: “Something Just Like This” and “High Hopes.” After she was cast, she received the mission of memorizing two songs in her Soprano part within a month—a D-30 count started as her practice time. When Yeji met her teammates for the first time, she was perfectly ready for her part. However, the only thing she lacked was the harmony between other teammates; at the center of A Capella, harmonious teamwork is necessary.

After several awkward practice meetings, the recording day finally arrived. During the serious and solemn atmosphere, Yeji was the second person to record. While Yeji has no special voice like other members, she is a steady singer who makes the least mistakes in the group. Because of her firm practices and steady vocals, she finished it very fast. After a full day of recording, the six members became closer, each very encouraging and helped her to ease the tension. She realized how the other five people were not only musically talented, but also human. She was also surprised by how they understood and enjoyed music generally; the practice was never a stressor for them.

Since then, Human Orchestra arranged their practice every week. In autumn, the festival season arrived. In December, Human Orchestra had three official concerts in total, including two Art Festivals (both for 9 & 10th grade and 11 & 12th grade), the guest singing performance for the 2019 Winter Ball, as well as the Landmark Media Cover Concert. During this busy period, Human Orchestra still recorded new work: “South of the Border” (a mash-up with “Galway Girl”). Underneath are several pictures of Human Orchestra’s performances. Standing in front of a thousand people was a big deal for an initially silent girl. However, the music was great. She realized how interesting and cool it is to show her talent in front of a crowd.

Music changed her, Human Orchestra changed her, and her passion for music and A Capella will continue.
