High School Biology Department: Department Seminar
On April 9, 2020, a SHSID high school biology department seminar was held online. During this seminar, teachers shared their experiences in online teaching. In slightly more than one month’s time, from early March to early April, teachers grew gradually from beginners in online teaching to experts who are skilled at using all sorts of teaching software and platforms. Teachers also figured out methods of online teaching that suit their students. Through online questioning, online quizzes, group discussion, and student teaching, teachers have overcome one major disadvantage of online teaching: lack of interaction.
Meanwhile, teachers also learnt together and discussed how to properly carry out online assessments that can truly and efficiently demonstrate students’ learning outcomes in online classes. The department head set high standards for making such open-book tests: questions must be more open-ended and flexible, providing ample space for students to think. In addition, test questions should help students to express their ideas fully and to demonstrate their talents. The department head also encouraged teachers to try their best to make questions that evaluate students’ synthetic thinking and critical thinking. During the seminar, teachers actively exchanged ideas, asked numerous questions, and had a passionate discussion on problems that appeared in online teaching and online assessment as well as possible solutions.
