Grade 6–8: “ABCD” Concept in E-Learning

At the end of March, the middle school students of SHSID have adjusted themselves very well to a time of E-learning, and the teachers of SHSID have tried their best to take lead in this trend. Facing the brand-new challenges together, students and teachers have achieved unexpected growth.

Teachers:be the leader

The breakout of COVID-19 presents challenges to students’ return. To cope with the upcoming problems, school started with arranging online course early Februaryand decided to use LinkedClassroom as the platform to carry course resources. Teachers always keep the “ABCD” concept in mind when they prepare the online course and try to bring students a holistic learning experience.

“A”:Agile. From the very beginning, teachershave actively planned and updatedtheir working process in this month.At the start, teachers could only use limited online tools to design their courses and tests.However, they have been eager to learn and make lessons go from good to excellent.

“B”: Better. The change from offline to online is not only “copy and paste” the content we had before to a place to be downloaded and shared. It requires teachers to redesign the courses and make them more interactive and fit the online format. To accomplish this goal, teachers have fully used online tools to create a more versatile learning environment.

“C”: Collaborative. Group work has become essentially important in this time of working from home. In weekly G6-8 staff meetings, teachers always share with eachother the solutions to problems or obstacles over various situations.

“D”: Decentralized. In online courses, students have more choices and freedom. Teachers havebuiltonline studying groupsso that a strong learning atmosphere is encouraged for the students to work with their classmates.

Students:be anactivelearner

Learning requires students to be self-regulated and self-disciplined. After trying variousskills of task management, like making to-do listsand checking in on upcoming events regularly, our students have become active learners. The data showed thathomework submission rates keep increasing. This is evidence that most students can understand the content and finish their assignments efficiently.

Students also show their extraordinary abilities in online activities, such as book recommendations, daily topical videos on a forum, and service-learning activities, among more. They really enjoy these activitiesthat help shorten the distance between teachers and students.
