Middle School Biology Department:8th Graders Raised Mushrooms
Towards the end of November, 8th grade students were broken up into groups and given a strange-looking plastic package. Inside were the beginnings of what were to grow into fully mature fungi. These fungi would absorb the nutrients inside the bag and sprout a reproductive structure called the fruiting body. The students had to use their knowledge gained from class to successfully raise the fungi. When the fruiting body appeared, students were then tasked with identifying its genus and species name. They did this by noting the appearance of the fruiting body and researching what other fungus had a similar appearance. The students recorded this whole process.
On Dec 18th, the students submitted a PPT presentation to their teachers, documenting the entire life cycle of the fungi. As there are thousands of species of fungi, students found the most difficult part of the project was identifying the fungi species by the features found on the fruiting bodies. The most enjoyable part of the project, by far, was after the project was over. As all of the fungi were edible, most students took their fungi, chopped them up, and made a delicious dish to reward themselves for a job well done.
