High School Biology Department: Open Class Series

December 25, 2019

Recently, SHSID high school biology department started open classes in different courses in 10th and 11th grades. On December 17th, in 10th grade biology open class “Fermentation”, students observed that gas was produced during yeast fermentation through experiments, thus gained a deeper understanding of the fermentation equation. Meanwhile, Mr Liao’s humorous lecture on various applications of fermentation in daily life impressed students deeply. On December 19th, in the 11th grade IB biology class, students drew possible gamete genotypes after meiosis when two genes are linked and when the genes are not linked. Through Ms. Gu’s easily-understood explanation and a series of linked questions, students identified their misunderstanding in relevant concepts, and completed class practice questions successfully. On December 20th, in 11th grade AP biology class, interesting class activities, such as virtual PCR, finding the criminals, and working as a restriction enzyme, showed students that molecular biology is frequently and widely used in real life, and deepened their understanding of abstract concepts such as PCR and restriction enzyme digestion.
