Eighth Grade Youth Development Class Lecture

December 18, 2019

On December 12th, 2019, students in 8th grade had three lectures during Youth Development class. The first lecture was simply about ‘Washing Hands’. How often do you see people leaving the toilet without washing their hands? Dirty hands are critical in spreading illnesses: four in five illnesses are spread by hands.

The purpose of the second lecture was to link teenagers and adults. We were told to read ‘Ten Things I’ve Been Meaning to Say to You’, by Jason Reynolds. Well…they were all quite meaningful, but one really resonated with most of the students: ‘Sing your song, do your dance, talk you talk. I sure did. We sure did.’ This impels young people to try new things, stay true to their own ideals and values, and remember to have fun doing so!

The third lecture built upon this structure and allowed more sharing-time between teachers and students. The topic was ‘Bereavement & Grief’. Students were asked to voice or write down their worries and these were addressed as a whole group. This was a unique opportunity for students and teachers to help one another.
