Grade 11-12: English Speech Competition

November 18, 2019

On November 13th, grade eleven and twelve CAS classes attended the annual English speech competition: SHSID Storyteller of the Year. After a brief example given by Mr. Brady, the twelve students taking part in the competition delivered their unique stories in dramatic and vivid style. This final competition was divided into two rounds: the first for students’ prepared speeches and the second for impromptu storytelling.

The stories in the first round were each intriguing and fascinating. The topics of the stories ranged from a childhood experience of being ignorant and naive on a night outing in Thailand to an imitation of a YouTube web celebrity. Each contestant gave the audience a different sense of humor and emotion. Some spoke about their conversations at home with their parents, which caused many students to experience mutual feelings, as well as silly mistakes made when the speakers were young, which also made the audience laugh.

Only six contestants entered the second round of impromptu speeches. This special challenge was even more difficult since it required speakers to not only to face hundreds of teachers and students, but also to speak after only 30 seconds of preparation time. Most of the participants were very nervous. Following the demonstration from drama teacher Mr. Paul Deichmann, the contestants took turns drawing their first line prompt and began their challenge. Although the preparation time was short, the contestants were still able to confidently tell their stories in various and impressive ways. They were very confident on the stage and told the audience some thrilling and humorous stories in two minutes.

After the five judges' detailed comments, Principal Mr. Ma Feng and Director Ms. Liu Qin presented the winners with a certificate of honor and a trophy. The champion, Teeya Lowe, received a Kindle as a reward.
