Grade 6 Chinese Culture Week

November 2, 2019

The week of October 21st kicked off Chinese Culture Week. The sixth graders participated in various events, including a few Chinese culture talks, cultural design projects, and a creative design project that served as the culminating moment of the week: the fashion show, which was put on by the teachers and students.

The morning of Friday, October 25th was a nervous day for the students. Some came to school dressed in their costumes, others changed in the classrooms, hallways, and bathrooms as they arrived at school. By first period, the finishing touches on traditional Chinese hairstyles and dresses were complete, and a visitor to the New Art Building could have confused it for an ancient Chinese museum come to life.

Everyone was involved—the teachers, the students, and the administration. Chinese Culture Week was a success. There were not only traditional Chinese clothes and Tang suits, but also new and improved Martial-art-style suits. The creativity of children is infinite!

Of course, all fun events can be used as a teachable moment, and what better way to help conclude a wonderful Chinese Culture Week than to celebrate Chinese history? The students were tasked with understanding the culture behind the clothes and reading Chinese history. It is a rare cultural experience for the children to see the reasons why certain details exist in an outfit, the history behind a pattern, and the implication of wearing such an outfit. It's Chinese history comes to real life.
