G5 Math Project – The Pattern in Petals

September 29, 2019

In the third week of the school year, an interesting project was assigned in the 5thgrade math class: look for a pattern and draw regular flower petals. Calla Lily has just one petal. Euphorbia has two petals. Trillium has three petals. Frangipani has five petals and bloodroot has eight petals. The students were to look for a pattern based on the number of petals and draw and color a fictitious flower with a maximum of 144 petals using their imagination.

By September 30th, the students handed in their well-designed petals. Some students painted beautiful flowers directly, and some showed the petals as an element of the picture. This topic combines mathematics and art, allowing students to explore, see, express, and truly feel the charm of mathematics.
