Pudong Grade 2·Science: Egg Drop Activity

September 28, 2019

On Tuesday, September 24th, grade two students from Pudong campus had a chance to be engineers. In science class, they were learning all about technology. This included the design process that engineers use to solve problems.

Students were required to work through all the steps of the design process to protect a (boiled) egg from cracking when dropped. They gathered materials at home and brought them to their classroom on Tuesday morning. The teachers could already see how creatively students were thinking by the types of materials they brought in. Next, students began to plan. They worked in groups to decide which materials would help protect the egg. Together in their groups, they created a design and then started to build. After, students tested their designs. This step was a learning process. There were no failures–only successes and learning moments. As Thomas Edison wisely stated, “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.” After the first round of testing, students improved their plans and redesigned. Once again, they tested their designs but from a higher distance. This time, students had more learning opportunities. Although some of the eggs cracked, it was truly impressive to see students working through the whole design process. Finally, we debriefed as a class.

It was incredible to see them using parachutes, cushions, padding, and many other methods to protect their eggs. Students were eager to share what worked but were also brave enough to share what did not. They know that with a growth mindset, they can always use their mistakes as learning opportunities. We have a group of creative engineers who will soon be ready for the challenges that our world faces.
