Pudong Grade 2: Reading Leaf Challenge
In grade two, students are working on exploring different genres of books by participating in a “Reading Leaf Challenge”.
During the month of May, students have been involved in a reading challenge where they read a new type of book each week and write some basic information and a brief review on a green paper in the shape of a leaf. When reading on their own, students usually stick to the genre they enjoy most, but we know that we need to “vary our library” to learn more information and improve our reading and writing skills. This “Reading Leaf Challenge” inspires students to read something outside of their preferred type of book, and encourages them to think about why they enjoyed it. To complete the reading leaf, students need to write a brief review each week telling whether they would recommend their book. This aspect ties together with their unit in English that focuses on persuasive writing. The task requires them to be concise and give the best reason to persuade other students to read their book.
The “Reading Leaf Challenge” has been a great success in motivating students to choose new genres of books and helps them practice the language they need to convince others to read new books. We have been so happy to see students not only reading outside their preferred genre, but realizing that they actually enjoy books of all kinds.
