Grade 6: Creative Program Expo

May 29, 2019

The sixth graders visited the Creative Program Expo last Thursday. All of the creative and innovative course classes set up different stations to present what they accomplished throughout the year, along with professional teams from scientific research institutes and companies.

At 12:45, the 6th graders entered the gym. Stations were lined up around the perimeter of the gym, with AI/DIY activities in the center. The engineering stations were located on the north side, each showing what the students have built with their knowledge on the topic. At many stations, students had the opportunity to watch a demonstration and actually operate robots. For example, at the First Lego station, students could mess up a solved Rubik’s cube and give it to a simple ‘two-armed’ machine to solve. Amazingly, it completed the challenge every time! At the Mobile Programming station, students were required to complete a memory game to earn a stamp. These activities were pretty fun for tech enthusiasts, but if those weren’t fun enough, the other stations covered a world of topics!

Down at the south side of the gym was the science section. From the CAS Organic Chemistry Institute to the Environmental Science Group, those at the science stations used their abundant knowledge and interesting experiments to show students the keys to different areas of science. Activities included observing a silkworm’s life stage, drawing bacteria specimens, and growing microbes underwater. Our school’s biology workshop teams presented their work and knowledge by making students perform fun experiments about several topics themselves.

Of course, nobody could miss the epic activities in the middle of the gym. In the DIY activity, students made small model trains with wheels and had them drive down a sloped track to test if they would derail or not. The 6th graders really had fun at the the VEX and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) stations. At the VEX station, four players controlled four different robots and tried to transport three balls without being disabled by the other players. At the UAV flying station, students lined up to fly a UAV through a simple obstacle course. It seemed easy at first, but the UAV was challenging to control because the direction would change after it spun; there was also the possibility of getting it tangled up in the net.

Last, but not least, the arts and literature stations lined the east wall. Legendary scholars would find themselves very comfortable among all the creative writing, art, design, and music. These stations displayed the students’ work from each creative and innovative course and let the audience marvel in awe at the students’ creativity.

After the activity ended, many students wanted to stay and continue learning. This exposition enhanced our scientific knowledge greatly, and everybody loved its creativity. Students got great prizes at the end and really enjoyed it! Overall, this activity was wonderful and we all look forward to the next expo!
