May 11th Shanghai School Sports Association Football League - SHSID vs KCIS

May 16, 2019

The much anticipated boys SSSA Football League final saw SHSID lock horns with KCIS. The season league game between these two teams ended in a 2-2 tie that saw two different styles of football being played. SHSID’s possession football vs KCIS speedy counter attacks. The final was no different.

SHSID had been preparing for the KCIS style of play. It was expected that KCIS would play 4-1-2-1 and use central attacking midfielders to run off their target striker. SHSID played an inverted defence to stop any attacks getting through. And, sure enough, SHSID stuck to the game plan and swiftly swept up any attacks from the KCIS front men. SHSID maintained excellent a possession in the first half and got into some fantastic scoring opportunities, but were lacking the end product. Attacking in wide areas and creating overloads ensured that SHSID kept probing and testing the KCIS defence, which held up well, and the KCIS goalkeeper was forced to make some great saves. The half ended 0-0 with SHSID on the front foot.

SHSID’s half time team talk concentrated on motivating the players to keep pushing for a goal, to keep getting into attacking positions, and to keep focussed.

SHSID players came out in the second half with sheer determination to get some goals. A bullet shot from *Eddie Lee*, which would have surely broken a hole in the net, forced the KCIS goal keeper to make a great save. SHSID continued to win corners and free kicks in and around the KCIS box but failed to make the chances count. One of the best plays from the game came from a SHSID throw on the left. KCIS blocked the forward pass, but failed to pressure the SHSID centre-back *Edward Chang*. * Edward Chang* received the ball on the left of his own half and knocked one of the best cross field passes you are likely to see in youth football. The ball wizzed through to *Peter Park* who took a great first touch forward and then knocked the ball back across goal to *Shunyo Isono* who smashed the ball to the left of the goal, but again the KCIS goal keeper got a hand to it and forced it out for a corner. SHSID were sure to get a goal soon. However, with 10 minutes to go, KCIS had other plans. Through a bad mistake in the SHSID defence, KCIS’s number 10 picked up on a loose ball, carried the ball across the box skipping away from two players before slotting the ball into the left corner of the goal. Totally against the run of play, SHSID were stunned. Short term memory was needed from SHSID players if they were going to win this game. SHSID turned another gear and continued to apply heaps of pressure on the KCIS defence. Again, chances were created and SHSID maintained fantastic possession. “It’s not over until the referee blows that whistle”. This burned in the mind of the SHSID players as they drove forward time and time again. Surely enough, if you work hard you will see the rewards, and with 30 seconds left to play, SHSID picked up on a lost ball on the right. This was it. The ball was played 1-2 into the midfield, *Tim Kang* skipped past one player, saw the space in front, and smashed a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom left corner. SHSID tied the game 1-1 for the final whistle.

Both teams scored their first 4 goals (*Edward* *Ling* *Tim* *Futao*). KCIS stepped up to take their 5th penalty and struck the ball to the left, the SHSID goal keeper *Ling Poow* dove the right way and got two strong hands to the ball for a fantastic save. *Andy Zhang* stepped up and with full of confidence, smashed the ball into the back of the net for SHSID to win 5-4 on penalties.
