Grade 9: Choosing, Chasing, and Capturing Dreams – My University Sharing Session

May 13, 2019

For many high school freshmen, the word “college” indicates a far off, intangible place laden with fantastic notions, like “fraternity party”, that can’t possibly measure up to reality. Fortunately, a recent CAS project called “My University,” has changed the 9th graders’ view of college and grounded it more firmly in exciting, yet realistic expectations.

In April, 9th grade students researched a university of their choosing, collecting information on areas such as admissions data, TOEFL baselines, application scattergrams as well as personal preferences like the presence of certain sports teams and clubs or the ratio of men to women. They then composed brief presentations on their findings, which were uploaded to the school’s Blackboard system. In the coming days, students will be showcasing their work to their fellow students during daily morning P&B sessions. This activity brings these institutions to life through facts, pictures, and mission statements that help students better understand these institutions and the collegiate options available to them.

Hopefully, in four years’ time, through constructive steps like this, these enthusiastic freshmen will have gained a concrete understanding of what college is like and how institutions can serve them in attaining their dreams.
