Grades 5-6: Open Day
The fifth and sixth grades held another successful Open Day.
The section prepared “boarding passes” for the parents to use on campus. After attending each class, parents could simply scan the QR code found on their boarding pass to provide feedback to the teachers. For the parents’ convenience, we also provided the Open Day schedule online in advance as well as on WeChat via the homeroom teachers. Not passing out hard copies saved a considerable amount of paper, which aligns with the sense of ‘global citizenship’ the students have learned in their Youth Development class.
During the first four morning classes, parents joined their fifth and sixth grade students in learning the class material and completing experiments. In Chinese class, students performed the elaborate dramas they had rewritten according to classical Chinese stories for their classmates, teachers, and the parents present. The games played in P.E. class not only helped students develop their athletic abilities but continued to hone their sense of teamwork. Given the opportunity to participate in these wonderful classroom activities, parents felt a sense of empathy towards their children and developed a greater appreciation for what it means to be an SHSID middle school student.
The talent show in the afternoon was the highlight of the day. After practicing their group performances over the past few weeks, students developed a deeper understanding of the saying “practice makes perfect”. The audience couldn’t help but give each and every performance a big round of applause. The talent was diverse, with performances in Latin dancing, magic, martial arts, and more. It was a great opportunity for students to showcase their variety of talents.
As the talent show ended, Open Day, too, came to an end. We hope that all of the fifth and sixth graders will continue to embrace a growth mindset in order to achieve success in their daily lives.
