Grades 9-10: Earth Day Activities
During the lunch break on April 22nd, engaging Earth Day activities were held in the ZXB lobby to bring students together and spread environmental awareness on tackling issues present in the ecosystem today. The Earth Day events attracted many pupils with captivating “save the world” themed posters, intriguing geographical questions, and rewards.
First, students were asked to write about the actions they took to protect the environment on a sticky note. The creative sticky notes were artistically decorated and placed on a white board for students and staff members to view. Messages included reducing plastic consumption, recycling used materials, and decreasing paper usage.
Pupils were also offered an opportunity to attend interactive questionnaire sessions, where they were required to answer at least two questions about the Earth to win stamps and snack prizes. With access to over 50 questions and answers, participants were able to gain a better understanding of the causes and effects of global environmental issues such as rising sea levels and soaring temperatures. After taking part in the Earth Q&A, a pupil commented that the activity helped him recognize in vivid terms the existing threat of global warming and the immediate actions that must be taken to address the emergency.
On the other hand, students were also able to vote for their favorite poster created by the respective ninth and tenth graders in honor of Earth Day. By utilizing a riot of colors and a variety of catchphrases such as “Save the Earth!”, “Celebrate Earth, Our Home”, and “Make every day Earth Day”, the student artists were fully able to captivate their audiences and spread information about these pressing issues to their fellow schoolmates.
The Earth Day activities helped high school students realize that, together, we can unite as one to protect our environment for ourselves and future generations!
During lunch on April 25th, the ECOCAP club and Happy Bean hosted another myriad of activities related to conserving the environment and Earth. Some activities were centered around educating students. One table was the “Trivia Table” and if a participant answered the question correctly, she or he could get their name put into the lottery box. Another popular activity was the trash sorting game. Participants would have 9 pieces of “trash” and decide which trash bin it should be deposed in. There was also a blue lemonade stand where students were encouraged to buy lemonade in glass bottles instead of plastic cups to help the environment. Fashionable hand-painted bags were also sold to reduce the amount of plastic used at the nearby Lawson’s.
Through their games, trivia, and food, ECOCAP allowed SHSIDers to have fun celebrating the Earth and the beauty of nature as well as to generate money to donate to environment conservation charities.
