Grade 12: IB Visual Arts Exhibition

April 12, 2019

With the 12th Grade IB courses closing to an end, the IB Visual Arts students also welcomed their final exhibition, featuring works they’ve completely throughout their two-year-course. This year, the exhibition is set in the annex of Xianmian building, opened for everyone that sets foot in the building.

The exhibition is divided into 4 areas, featuring works from the 4 IB VA students: Lucy, Linchelle, Mia, Andy, ranging from 2D paintings to 3D abstract sculptures and installations, and finally to digital works of animations and illustrations. Each student designed their own exhibition, from picking an overall theme for their works to designing the layout of the exhibition. Curatorial rationales and plaques are labeled beneath each work, briefly introducing the theme of each student’s exhibition and meanings behind each work. This exhibition is an accumulation of not just the students’ assignments throughout their IB course, but most importantly, of their wisdom, revelations and philosophy as an artist and student.

The secretary of party committee Mr. Wang also arrived at the exhibition and was not only surprised at the high artistic qualities of the works, but further at the profound and intriguing meanings behind each work. Let’s have a tiny glimpse at the meanings behind some of the student’s works:

Lucy’s artworks surround the theme of her growth as an artist and a student.

Most of her artworks are self-portraits in different media and styles. Her favorite piece is the 3D installation work, Will We Forever Be Alone?, exploring the relationship between the society and individual. When sunlight shines through the glass at different angles, different colors and patterns will be projected onto the figure.

Linchelle’s works surround the theme of journey and life, using different media and shapes to symbolize each stage of life across her works. Her favorite work is the series of sculpture named Rebirth, with each sculpture symbolizing a stage of human life: from innocence to maturity.

Andy’s works surround his experience of cultural shock as a Korean student living in China, but studying in an American international school. His 3D work, Spirit, depicts himself divided into 3 people with different cultural identities: a Chinese, an American, and a Korean. Mr. Wang praised how this work completely captured the spirit and essence of the international education that SHSID strives for: to nourish an international environment welcomed for students across different nationalities.

Mia’s works surround the theme of Buddhism, especially with the concept of reincarnation. She had poetries from 诗经 imprinted throughout her works. One of her series of works, Attack on Savagery and infernal Burden, recounts a person’s journey of salvation and repentance of sins.
