Grade 8: Cultural Bazaar Presentations

After weeks of preparation for the annual SHSID cultural bazaar, a few students were selected to present the unique culture of the country assigned to their homeroom. Students representing countries from Thailand to France were able to present the distinctive cultures of their country, as well as learn more about new cultures and countries previously foreign to them.

As one of Shanghai’s most prestigious international schools, SHSID boasts a diverse host of students from all corners of the world. With the upcoming cultural bazaar—where classes representing many diverse nations share traditional foods, games, and culture—students were able to research and understand their homeroom’s assigned country more in depth as they developed their projects and presentations. Students made use of creative formats of presentation to make their projects more appealing and interactive for the audience.

The first cultural presentation was one on the distinctive art styles of France, presented in a gallery-walk format. This creative yet effective style of presentation allowed for audience members to interact with the presentation, and learn about French art through visuals that captured the essence of each phase of art. Next came a Thai cooking lesson that introduced a brief history of Thai cuisine, which featured a video to that taught the audience how to make two signature Thai dishes. Lastly, two language lessons followed one another. The first was on the Thai language families, and the second was on Gaelic: the native language of Ireland.

As a result, students are better prepared for the upcoming cultural bazaar; they are able to understand the beliefs and traditions of multiple countries, which will help them greatly in the future if they ever travel abroad. By learning about these diverse cultures and values, students can expand their global horizons and look at situations through a different perspective.
