Grade 5:Field Trip to Disney Resort

March 22, 2019

The 5th graders had their much-anticipated field trip on Thursday, March 21st, a scavenger hunt in the Disney resort area!

The fifth graders were so thrilled to travel off campus to compete in a scavenger hunt. 21 teams from different homerooms embarked on a trek in the Disney resort that Thursday afternoon. At every destination, each team was required to compete in a series of challenges, some mental and some physical, and only when the tasks were completed would they learn of the next location to go to. The first team to arrive at the final destination won a big prize.

Each team leader received the mission instructions via a special field trip Wechat group. Their team flag and logo were designed in advance. Half of the teams started with at the “Explore traditional Chinese elements” point and the other half began in the Wishing Star Park with the map. Everyone brought their team flags and their passion.

We all really appreciated the students’ excellent teamwork and intelligence they demonstrated throughout the games. They applied the communication and time management skills they had learned from Youth Development classes into each challenge, and because each group member felt free to express their thoughts and be listened to, many groups finished the tasks quickly and successfully.

Before making decisions, many group members found themselves spending time discussing the problem because trying to solve it. During this process, they were able to find better solutions for even the most challenging of tasks. “Do not quit” became the most popular words out of the students’ mouths.

Working as a team required patience and tolerance from each student but it was also a great opportunity to help students further understand of each other. It’s often the quieter of students that were able to recognize specific patterns and signs at first sight, astonishing other group members. Given the supportive environment, many students soon discovered that one of the great advantages of working in teams is to leverage the differences between all members of a team.

The trip was a little regretful because of the rain. But the fifth graders still felt graceful. They finally came to understand that if team members could rise above and stick to their grits, they can achieve greatness. Special thanks to all the parents for their indispensable volunteer work before, during, and after the field trip.
