The 9th and 10th Graders Visiting Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum

January 21, 2019

Just after finishing their last final examinations on Jan. 16, a group of students climbed onto a bus to visit the Jewish Refugee Museum in Hongkou.

SHSID and the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum have begun a partnership. In the spirit of that partnership the History Department and the Music and Theatre Department have conceived of a piece of creative scholarship for students.

The departments held a week long series of auditions for interested students to join the theatre project. Those students who came for the auditions will create a play about period of refugee migration to Shanghai in the 1930s-1940s. The interdisciplinary project will present its work in conjunction with the 9th and 10th grade history video project awarding ceremony.

The students were led through the museum’s galleries, and given time to reflect on what they were seeing. When students were asked what they had learned from the museum and what they looked forward to in this project, Sophia Wen of 9(6) answered: “The Shanghainese were very kind to Jewish people during WWII.” Jessica Wang of 9(5) also chimed in: “The visit was an eye opening experience that allowed us to get a much closer look into a typical Jewish refugees’ life and the challenges they faced abroad.” Hannah Zhou of 9(3) answered “Learning about Jewish culture and history, and telling their story to others,” and Janelle Liu of 10(7) said: “That the project will be able to show the thoughts and inner emotions of the Jews.”
