Grade 8: Service Learning Reflection

January 10, 2019

On January 3rd, 2019, 8th graders gathered in the auditorium for the service learning reflection assembly. The service learning group leaders gave a presentation on their group and what they have done. Lucy Collinson from 8 (6) walked us through the process of making a publication. The “One Million Meters” group, led by Sarah Hu of 8(1) ran 50,000 meters and were able to raise 1,000 yuan for their charity. Tony Shin from 8 (9) talked about his service learning group, “MPCT” which included members Jason Cho from 8(9) and Josh Lee from 8(11). He explained why the group decided to clean up Minhang Park as well as how they cleaned it. The many other groups who were unable to present were instead represented through a video created by the teachers.

A representative from a foundation that provides libraries and books for children in rural schools was also invited to speak at the meeting. The representative explained the foundation’s teacher training program. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we were unable to watch the whole presentation. However, we were able to view the “rap” the students from those schools created. The rap was about the problems students in rural areas faced and what experiences they had to go through. This allowed us 8th graders to appreciate our own circumstances. We were able to see that there are other students, our age, who do not get the same opportunities that have been offered to us on a silver platter.

Though Service Learning is not as academically important as subjects such as English and Math, it teaches us to give back to the communities that we live in. Service Learning allows us to grow mentally, and we students have become more empathetic and responsible after our first semester of Service Learning. Next semester, we will have even more service learning groups to look forward to!
