Grade 7: A Lecture About Surgical Robotics

January 4, 2019

During the CAS period, Roger’s mother, Mrs. She, was very kind to give a lecture explaining her job as a surgeon to the seventh graders. Mrs. She works at the Shanghai United Family Hospital as a gynecologist; today she told us about new surgical technology through a captivating PowerPoint presentation and a few videos.

First, she gave us an overview of her job as well as a brief timeline of the developments in robotic surgery. She talked about the Da Vinci Surgical System and the convenience of robots in medicine. To aid our comprehension, she explained the three main parts of the machine and showed us a video about how it works. There is a console where the surgeon performs the actions of the surgical process, a screen where the surgeon can see what is inside without having to directly look at the body, and a patient side cart with robotic arms controlled from the console. Three of the arms perform the surgeon’s actions and the other holds the camera. This new piece of robotic technology can aid surgical performance as it is more efficient and has a higher success rate.

Next, Mrs. She used another video to show how hospitals are leaning towards using artificial intelligence to give advice to their patients and diagnose symptoms. She showed statistics to explain the fact that, although this machinery is expensive, it is popular among hospitals because of its effectiveness. She even gave out prizes to the enthusiastic students who answered her questions.

This lecture was very educational and eye-opening, and all the students learned something new. The whole seventh grade thanks Mrs. She for making time for us!
