Grade 9: Assembly – Student Representative’s Speech(January )

January 3, 2019

On Wednesday, January 2, 2019, the 9th grade students of SHSID gathered in the Xianmian Building Annex during P&B to attend an inspiring lecture by Cathy Zhang from class 9(4). Her lecture was centered around what is perhaps the most well-known competition amongst the grade 9 students: CTB, or China Thinks Big. She aroused the audience’s interest by first asking CTB participants in the audience about their experiences in the competition. Most found that participating in this competition was stressful. Cathy, however, followed this by presenting a completely different view. To her, CTB was fun. She admitted that CTB was stressful but told her fellow students that the stress and big work load also meant a great chance to improve “time management, research skills, and team corporation”.

She shared the story of her trip to interview sanitation workers who clean public bathrooms, which was the focus of her group’s CTB study. She further told of her dramatic change from very timid and shy to more experienced and confident. She expressed that, despite consuming a lot of time, her trips for CTB allowed her to learn so much more information than if she had quit CTB simply from the stress. She explained that students tend to focus too much on results, rather than the experience of completing the task.

She went on to share her experience in being asked to volunteer at the Model United Nations conferences on November 14th to 16th. Despite not remembering signing up, she still went to the conference even though the volunteering would take place the entire weekend before monthly exams. Surprisingly, however, she was happy about spending her precious, golden review hours helping serve others. She found that her time, and admittedly her GPA, was worth her experience. She made many new friends and had many new experiences. Cathy ended her lecture with this wisdom for her fellow students to take home: don’t focus too much on the results. Focus more on the game than the loss.
