Grade 8: A Description from a First Aid Team Member
Grade 8: A Description from a First Aid Team Member
Everyone thinks they know a thing or two about first aid, but when you actually attend the first aid classes hosted by OSMART, you find a whole new world of first aid knowledge waiting for you.
The first class was something different for all of us; for some it was an opportunity to pursue their dream job, for others, maybe just a chance to get a free medical kit from the OSMART team.
In the first class, we learned how to put on and take off medical gloves in a safe way and basic CPR techniques. Taking off or putting on gloves may seem like an easy task, but for medical professionals, it’s a very complex task that needs to be done with caution. First, blow into the gloves to make sure there are no holes in them, so the harmful or infectious substances won’t get onto your hand. After this small safety check, put them on. After use, take the first glove on the outside and pull it off, now it should be inside out, the harmful substances or patients bodily fluids contained on the inside. Then, reach under the second glove and pull it off while holding the first, and wrapping it in the second. Then, dispose of the gloves in a medical waste bin.
You may think you know a lot about CPR and when it’s safe to use, but you’re most likely incorrect. First, check your surroundings. If unsafe, bring the injured person to a safe place to seek medical attention. Second, check if the patient is breathing and whether he or she is conscious or not. If they are not breathing, it means it is very likely the person’s heart has stopped beating, and it’s time to use CPR.
Before conducting, ask other people to help you call your local number for medical help and ask those with some medical knowledge to assist you in performing CPR. Place your hand on the other and squeeze, then, place both onto the center of the persons chest. Apply short pushes down, then up, and for us - no rescue breaths yet - meaning we don’t need to give the person two breaths every 30 pushes.
First aid is an incredibly important thing to learn. One day you may need to use the set of skills you were taught by the OSMART team.
