Primary Subjects Department: All Things Are Made of Matter!

In grade 2, students are already learning about the building blocks of life.

First, we discussed how small atoms really are. Students watched a video and discovered that if an atom was the size of a blueberry, we would need to fill the entire Earth with blueberries to show the amount of atoms in a grapefruit. Amazing! Once students were familiar with the parts of an atom, they created atom models using simple materials like string, pipe cleaners and clay. They carefully created a nucleus out of clay with different colored protons and neutrons. Then, they added clay electrons on a pipe-cleaner “orbital” around the outside of the nucleus.

Finally, students learned more about molecules and matter. How can we describe matter? Students learned about the properties of matter, and the power of observation by hypothesizing what was in certain mystery containers. Through this method, students were able to determine whether the container contained a solid, liquid, or gas, and then were able to describe its unique properties once the mystery item was revealed.
