Grade 11: Shakespeare Drama Festival

Last weekend on December 5th 2015, our school’s musical club entered the Shakespeare drama festival inChina. We were up against ten teams all over East China, fromZhejiangtoJiangsuprovince. Each team had twenty minutes to perform one of Shakespeare’s pieces. Throughout the competition we’ve seen plays such as “The Merchant of Venice”, “Hamlet”, “Romeo and Juliet” and lastly, our play, “Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Though it was a competition, most of us in the group made friends with the other competitors. All of them awed us as they gave life to Shakespeare’s Legacy. Their techniques and styles impressed us greatly. During recessions, we would often chat with the competitors and exchange each of our own special techniques for acting. When we waited to be announced on stage, we would learn new dance moves from other teams. However, in the end, our school outshined them all. Thanks to our music teacher. Mr. Sang, we changed the whole play into an exciting and entertaining musical. We had songs of Oberon (Jeffrey Fu) quarreling with his wife Titania (Esther) on who to keep the Child of India. We had Helena (Amber Cai) fighting to keep her beloved Demetrius (YiHong Lee) from loving another women. There were moments of Romance in the play, such as the sweet couple ofAthens, Helena (Amanda Do) and Lysander (Christian Chu), singing love to each other. Finally we had moments of mischief made by me, Puck (Kyle Jiang), who shook the forest in mayhem.

Though our performance was smooth, the begging of the journey was not.

We kept on singing until our throats could not make a single note. We danced and danced as we kept pushing us to our limit. With each step came perfection and in the end it was all worth it.

We all enjoyed our time working together, dancing together and singing together. Each of us were happy with what we have made. This production wouldn’t have been able to be produced without each other; from being strangers with each other to being one big harmonic family.
