Grade 11&12: Teaching English at Hongmei Primary School
On the afternoon of November 20th, the club leaders of E&A attended the launching ceremony of the After School Extracurricular Volunteer Program atHongMeiPrimary School. After listening to many speeches given by HongMei Primary School Principal, our own Director Liu and many others, we were led to our classroom. With the club leaders of Nexus and ETC, we worked together to teach a class of 40 second-graders. We started off with a brief introduction of ourselves and asked the students for both their English and Chinese names. We gave English names to those who did not have them and at the end of class everyone was pleased with their new names. We also taught the students counting in English -- a simple but useful lesson! Seeing their happy faces, we were deeply satisfied. Even though it was at times a bit disorganized, we would conclude the first time teaching at Hongmei was a success. Of course there is room for improvement, and we will keep working on those weaknesses in order to make the class more efficient.
E&A club (G11)and ETC club(G12) are the teams of high-schoolers whose aim is to promote educational achievement of migrant students and inspire their interest in English. Over the past two years, we have held fundraising events and saw progress in the children’s English. Our recent expansion allows students who are unavailable on Sundays opportunities to teach. The E&A Friday Program will send two students toHongMeiPrimary Schoolfor one hour every week. We look forward to recruiting new members and strengthening our club!
