Grade 12: The Voice of Halo Singing Competition

The Voice of Halo 2015 concluded in the evening of November 15th after three months of preparation.

Halo, founded in 2013, is a club that provides for those in need in a way different to other charity clubs. Through Microfinance and small loans, Halo loans its money to the poor inNingxiaProvinceat a small interest rate, instead of simply donating it. Using the interest money, they buy gifts for the children there.

At the end of this summer, Halo leaders established the objectives for the event this year. Those objectives included expanding the number of participating schools, earning a large profit, raising the quality of the competition, and establishing a lasting reputation among high schools inShanghaias one of the biggest singing events of the year. With the help of many supporters, they met those goals by earning a total revenue of over 40,000RMB, and profiting over 16,000RMB, attracting students from nearly 30 schools, over 80 contestants.

For this year’s VOH, the members of Halo improved the quality of every aspect of the competition, from venue to judges to prizes. Holding the finals in a professional live stage, Mao Livehouse, gave the contestants an amazing platform to shine and display their talents, while audience members could fully enjoy the voices of our contestants in an exceptional atmosphere. The judges this year were also professionals in their respective fields, including an IB Music teacher, a Professor from the Shanghai Music Conservatory, and a successful artist who had worked with many popular pop singers. Together, they offered their expertise to our contestants.

Through 5 rounds of intense competition,VirginiafromShanghaiTheaterAcademywon first place, stunning the audience and judges with Beyonce’s “If I were a Boy”. Second place was Violet from Shanghai Taiwanese Children’s School, who was a clear fan favorite, sang Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory.” Third place went to Bian Qianwen fromShanghaiUnitedInternationalSchool, who impressed everyone with her unique style and easygoing attitude. As the Voice of Halo 2015 came to an end, we realized that we had created a platform which allowed contestants, judges, and audience members to exchange emotions, voices, and cheers. The Voice of Halo is no longer merely a singing competition, but a place where friendship and love comes together, bringing out the best in all of us. We believe that Halo will bring us more about love.
