Puxi Grade Five:Field Trip, Shanghai Film Museum
Puxi Grade Five:Field Trip, Shanghai Film Museum
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, 29th October 2015, all 7 classes of grade 5 students and their homeroom teachers made a short bus journey to the Shanghai Film Museum in Xujiahui for their Autumn field trip.
The dreary wet and grey weather could not derail the students’ excitement as they began their discovery of this monumental museum, which houses over 3,000 artifacts depictingChina’s rich film industry beginning from the 19th century. Before they embarked on their exploration with their smaller groups, a short introductory film was aired in the main hall of the museum. Through this film, students learned that Shanghai was the birthplace of filmmaking inChina back in the mid 19th century.
The museum is efficiently designed over 4 floors. Students and teachers explored the different floors and were amazed at every corner they turned. Apart from the various visual artifacts and displays, such as elaborate costumes, gruesome and scary stage make-up and types of filming equipment used in the past 100 years, there were many interactive, hands-on stations where visitors could learn about how illusion is created on film. The kids also enjoyed playing with items that can make a variety of sound effects.
The students additionally watched a short 4D film in the movie hall. Even though many children are familiar with the legends of the Monkey God, they still found the multi-sensory cartoon highly entertaining. Squeals of delight and surprise could be heard throughout the show as they felt horses’ tails swishing against their feet, water spraying on their faces and objects rubbing against their backs simulating a back massage!
Despite the relatively short history of filmmaking in China, the children learned so much about this industry through this field trip, and now have a better appreciation of the amount of work that goes into making a movie. And who knows? There might even be a young George Lucas or Angelina Jolie in the making too!
