A Lecture on Trans-genetic Plants

On Saturday September 19, 2015, students from SHSID middle school visited the Institute of Plant Physiology & Ecology to listen to a lecture about trans-genetic plants. During the lecture, the professor talked about the process of dedifferentiation and how to grow plants from the material produced by that process. He also told us about the trans-genetic process and its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include: 1) having desirable traits, 2) increasing nutrients, and 3) decreasing costs. Disadvantages include: 1) Invading species, 2) damaging other species, and 3) causing customer’s immune systems to reject antibiotics.

The same day, students saw the lab and greenhouse. They were instructed not to touch anything without permission and to avoid wandering off by themselves. In the lab, they saw machines used for the process of trans-genetics, as well as other chemicals for botany. In the greenhouse, they saw different plants before and after the trans-genetics process. The difference was difficult to immediately see since they were still sprouts, however it was an interesting process to observe.

In conclusion, it was a trip full of science and fun.
