Grade 11 Company Visit: UM-STJU Joint Institute

On April 8th, 2015, several students from Shanghai High School International Division visited UM-STJU Joint Institute, an engineering education institute founded in 2006 under a global partnership between University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Students were initially expecting boring lectures and a lame introduction about the institute, but they were surprised to find out that they would join an actual class: introduction to religious philosophies. They engaged actively into discussion sessions, exchanging ideas with both the professor and the students of JI. After being introduced to the significance of religion and underlying philosophies, students moved to their next destination: a science lab experimenting on wireless charging. The instructor gave students the opportunity to carry on the experiment by themselves. All were interested in the theory behind wireless charging and watched the process in awe. Jaeyi Hong from 11(3) exclaimed, “I never understood how mobile phone companies could offer wireless charging. This is how it works!” Most students desired to stay in the lab longer, but they had to carry on with the schedule. When they found out that their next plan was to meet personally with a professor in JI, they were both excited and nervous. The professor was very humorous, telling students about his past experiences in different places of the world. He also provided students with his thoughts on the future of JI, and students were impressed by the depth of his insight. Ashley Lee, a student from class 11(9), stated, “When will I ever, ever have this change again, talking one-on-one to a professor and even having the opportunity to act as a translator!” All of the students shared their impressions about this valuable experience and thanked the professor for devoting his precious time to them. Memories may fade over time, but the feelings, the sense of fulfillment, the effervescence, will be there, in the students’ hearts forever.
