Career Day

On Wednesday, October 29, 2014 the Xian Mian Building welcomed fifteen guest speakers to share their experiences in their respective professions. The guest speakers ranged from journalists, reporters, and doctors, to pilots, travel planners, lawyers, architects, and many more.

As the lunch hour came to an end, junior and senior students each filed into the rooms that was holding the career speech they were interested in. Sitting in chairs that had been rearranged, the students waited excitedly for the guest speakers to enter. Students clapped as the guest speakers arrived and began their speeches, and they were enraptured by the different stories that were shared. Guest speakers shared their personal experiences on what working in each field entailed, the challenges they had encountered and overcome, information about their companies, and other interesting facts.

During their speeches, the guest speakers welcomed and encouraged students to ask questions. The guest speakers also asked students questions back to engage their attention. “As a professional reporter, what is your first reaction if…” The ICS reporter, Zhang Jun, started his presentation with various questions. Students actively threw in their responses, and upon hearing the correct response he was looking for, Mr. Zhang proceeded with his presentation. He also played videos clips about radio telescopes, gas, and electricity usage, topics that are common in his work at ICS and journalism in general. Throughout his speech, students asked questions that were all answered thoughtfully. The presentations were also filled with humor, as Mr. Zhang’s occasional witty comments on his own stories made the audience burst out in laughter.

This career day was a valuable experience for students as they were able to gain insights about many careers they would usually have little contact or knowledge about. The guest speakers also provided very interactive presentations that furthered student engagement and understanding. “The tourist management was really detailed. The guest speaker would first ask you what you would like to know and then go from there,” Kelly Wu 11(1A) said.

In all, the Career Day put together for the students was able to help them further explore their interests and gain a deeper understanding of their future fields of work.
