Grade 10: Challenge Ourselves In HMUN
On Thursday morning, a group of 17 SHSID delegates arrived at Wuzhou Hotel for the HMUN conference. For the next four days, in six intense sessions, the delegates received various challenges.
The first task was to be voted a bloc leader. The difficulty was getting to know all the people from a variety countries and persuading them that you were the best suited to lead. Students used different strategies when trying to form their own bloc, such as taking down everyone’s phone numbers and texting them in private, or asking people from their committee to gather around once the first session had ended.
The next challenge was to write a working paper. The blocs had to incorporate many delegates' ideas and opinions into one document. Because there were sometimes as many as twenty people to a bloc, and delegates were given only one night to finish, they needed to work hard in order to find compromises and solutions that everyone could agree on.
The final challenge was to merge with the other blocs, write a draft resolution and convince the chair to recognize you as the leader of the new, merged bloc. This needed to be done by showing respect towards other bloc leaders, typing up a draft resolution and convincing others that you are the most qualified individual to serve as bloc leader.
Congratulations to this year’s delegation!
