Poetry Across Borders

June 11, 2020

From May to June, SHSID held “诗词歌赋”(Poetry Across Borders), an event to celebrate poetry and culture. During this time, high school students were encouraged to recite famous Chinese poems, sing Chinese songs, and write their own Chinese poetry.

About “诗”

On June 5th, students played Fei Hua Ling, a traditional Chinese poetry game, which required them to recite different poems according to a particular word. In order to win this game, students needed to utilize their existing poetry knowledge by reciting as many poems correctly as possible. They spent much time reading, preparing, and reciting poems in May and June to make sure that their activity was an instant success. A student in grade 10 reflected on how much she enjoyed the activity and poetry by stating how much she adored this kind of life: drinking a cup of tea and reading a piece of Tang poetry.

About“词”

On June 5th, students participated in lots of games related to “Ci”, such as “guess the idiom according to a picture” and creative poetry writing. Students loved these games so much that they often cheered and shouted during these activities to show their enthusiasm.

About“歌”

A popular show called "The Masked Singer" was added to this festival. According to the requirements, students needed to sing a Chinese song with a mask on their faces. Students were asked to be prepared with their songs and masks before June 5th. Some students even recorded their songs in a professional place, while other students used professional software to make their songs more fantastic.

There were more than 100 recordings in total, and the best 25 have already been posted on school’s official Chinese culture WeChat account: 龙吟社.
